A photographic exhibition is on display at the Correios Porto Alegre Cultural Space, which is part of the project “Serrano Craft Cheese – Cultural Identity in Campos de Cima da Serra”. The show consists of 45 panels with photographs that seek to rescue the history of production artisan cheese, made for over 200 years in the Campos de Cima da Serra region, in Rio Great South.
The tradition of family labor, which uses only raw milk, rennet and salt to make cheese, has been passed down from generation to generation and is now registered by veterinarians Saionara Araujo Wagner and João Carlos Santos da Luz and by zootechnician Jaime Eduardo Ries in a book that is also part of the project. The images in the book, displayed in the space, are by photographer Fernando Kluwe Dias. The project also included the work of journalist Ricardo Bueno, from Alma da Palavra.
In addition to photographs, multimedia material, videos and reports on cheese production are also part of the exhibition. The material rescues the origins of a product that carries the history of Azorean colonization and the beginnings of the occupation of the state's territory. Currently, around three thousand producers manufacture artisanal mountain cheese in municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina.
The exhibition can be visited by the public until the 25th of August, from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10 am to 6 pm. Admission is free. The Correios Cultural Space is located on the ground floor of the company's historic building at Praça da Alfândega (historic center of Porto Alegre), with access from the side, on Avenida Sepúlveda.
