Science Day and Night Activities – Education and Transformation

Check this post for some suggestions for Science Day and Night Activities, to work with students of the1 (first) yearof elementary school.

Excellent suggestions ready to work in the classroom or as a homework assignment.

Science Day and Night Activities

In order for the student to understand the relationship between the Earth's rotational movement and the occurrence of days and nights.

Note: In general, this theme is usually abstract and, even if children verbalize what occurs daily, often they are just repeating what they read, but they do not understand the process.

Step-by-step Science Activity 1 year:

  • Take the class to the courtyard or the court.
  • Organize the class into pairs, one student in the pair will be the Sun and the other the Earth.
  • Ask the pairs to chalk a circle on the floor.
  • The student-Sun must remain stationary in the center of the drawing and the student-Earth must place himself on the traced line.
  • Look at the schematic.
  • The Earth-student will slowly turn on itself like a top and, at the same time, moving around the circumference.
  • This second movement represents the Earth's translation and, to discuss it, although possible, it is not the objective of the activity.
  • Afterwards, the students must change roles: who was Earth becomes Sun and vice versa.

After the activity, propose a discussion with the following questions:

1) During the journey from “Earth”, was the “Sun” seen all the time? Because?

2) When it was not possible to see the “Sun”, was the “Earth” being illuminated? Because?
