The Suffering of. Hypocrite, according to Victor Hugo
The poet, writer and playwright Victor Hugo wrote the. following poem about the hypocrite:
“To have lied is to have. suffered. The hypocrite is a patient in the double sense of the word; calculates one. triumph and suffer an ordeal. The indefinite premeditation of a bad action, accompanied by doses of austerity, the inner infamy tempered by the excellent. reputation, deceiving continually, never being who you are, delusion, is one. fatigue. Compose candor with all the black elements working on. brain, wanting to devour those who worship him, caressing, holding back, repressing himself, always being alert, constantly spying, composing the face of latent crime, make a beauty out of deformity, make a perfection out of perversity, tickle with the dagger, put sugar in the poison, watch over the frankness of the gesture and. in the music of the voice, not having your own look, nothing more difficult, nothing more. painful. The hateful of hypocrisy begins darkly in the hypocrite. Cause. Nausea drink perpetually the imposture. The sweetness with which cunning disguises. wickedness repulses the wicked, continually obliged to bring this mixture into the. mouth, and there are moments of nausea when the hypocrite almost vomits his thought. Swallowing that saliva is a horrible thing. Add to this deep pride. There are strange times when the hypocrite esteems himself. There is an unreasonable self in the. impostor. The worm slides like the dragon and how it stiffens and rises. O. a traitor is no more than a stunted despot who cannot do his will. if not resigning to the second role. He is pettiness capable of enormity. O. hypocrite is a dwarf titan".
Victor Hugo, in “The Workers of the Sea”.
