Azul de Minas, by Laticínios Cruzília, is produced in the south of the state and competed with more than 3,000 other cheeses
Azul de Minas won a silver medal at the 31st World Cheese Championship, held this year in Bergen, Norway. The Minas cheese is a gorgonzola, produced by Laticínios Cruzília, in the city of Cruzília, in the south of the state, about 320 kilometers away from Belo Horizonte. The grand champion of the contest was Fanaost, an aged gouda produced by Norwegian Jørn Hafslund from the milk of a herd of just 12 cows in Ostegården. The award took place on the 2nd of the month and evaluated 3,472 cheeses.
The Minas Gorgonzola by brothers Luiz and Carlos Medeiros Almeida is a pasteurized milk cheese, cured for about 45 days in an exclusive production room in the south of Minas. In addition to Azul de Minas, the factory sells the brands ‘A Lenda‘, ‘Santo Casamenteiro’, ‘Cruzília Reserva’ and the ‘Todos Dias’ line, with the most known and consumed by the public.
In all, 599 cheeses were awarded bronze, 486 silver, 339 gold and 78 called 'super gold', which competed for the world title. In 2016, Tulha, from Fazenda Atalaia, in São Paulo, won a gold medal.
Traditionally, the contest is held in Nantwich, England. However, in recent years, the award has traveled to cities already awarded with winning cheeses. The next edition, in 2019, will be held in Bergamo, Italy.
