Brazil began publishing books in 1808 with the foundation of the Imprensa Régia by D. John VI. The first work to be ______________ was “Marília de Dirceu”, by Tomás Antônio Gonzaga.
At that time, it was the Emperor who decided which books would be published. Printing outside the royal workshops was prohibited. Therefore, only what did not offend the State, religion and customs was disclosed.
The first Brazilian newspaper published was Gazeta do Rio de Janeiro. Only after the repeal of the ban on printing books, in 1821, did newspapers, leaflets and magazines begin to spread. The first magazine was called As Varieties or Literature Essays.
