The explanation lies in the land on which it was built, in Pisa (Italy), formed by layers of sand and clay: it could not bear the weight of the work (14 thousand tons). As a result, the tower began to lean early in construction, in the 12th century. To alleviate the problem, restoration works were carried out at the site between 1999 and 2001, which stabilized the tower. Unless there's a big earthquake, it should remain standing for a long time.
