The first showing of films in Brazil took place in July 1896, in Rio de Janeiro, a few months after the invention of the cinematograph (the “father” of the projector), by the Lumière brothers. A year later, there was already a fixed movie theater in Rio, the “Salão de Novidades Paris”, by Paschoal Segreto.
The first Brazilian films were only shot between 1897-1898. A “View of Guanabara Bay” would have been filmed by Italian cameraman Alfonso Segreto, on June 19, 1898, upon arriving from Europe. But this film, if it really existed, was never shown. Even so, June 19 is considered the Day of Brazilian Cinema precisely because of this story.
