One day, Maria came home from school, very sad.
- What's it? asked Maria's mother.
But Maria didn't even want to talk. She went straight to her room, grabbed her Snoopy and threw herself on the bed, where she lay sulking.
Maria's mother went to see if Maria had a fever. She wasn't. She asked if she was feeling anything. She wasn't. She asked if she was hungry. She wasn't. She asked what it was then.
"Nothing," Maria said.
Her mother decided not to insist. He left Maria lying on the bed, cuddling with her Snoopy, sulking. When Maria's father came home from work, Maria's mother warned:
“Better not even talk to her…
Maria had a face of few friends. Worse. She looked like no friend.
At the dinner table, Maria suddenly spoke:
"I'm not worth anything."
Maria's father said:
'First of all, you don't say 'I'm worthless.' It's "I'm not worth anything". Second, it's not true. You are worth a lot. I mean, it's worth a lot.
— I'm not.
- But what is this? said Maria's mother. “You are our dear. Everyone likes you. Mom, Dad, Grandma, Uncles, Aunts. To us you are a gem.
But Maria was not convinced. She said she was like a thousand other people. To millions of other people.
— In my class alone there are seven Marias!
“Darling…” her mother began. But the father interrupted.
"Maria," said her father, "do you know why a diamond is worth so much money?"
“Because it's rare. A piece of glass is also beautiful. But glass is everywhere. A diamond is hard to find. The rarer a thing is, the more it is worth. Do you know why gold is worth so much?
- Because?
— Because there is very little gold in the world. If gold were like sand, we would walk in the gold, we would roll in the gold, then we would go home and wash the gold off our bodies so as not to get dirty. Now, imagine if in the whole world there was only one nugget of gold.
“It would be the most valuable thing in the world.
- So it is. And in the whole world there is only one Mary.
— It's seven in my class alone.
— But they are other Marias.
"They're just like me." Two eyes, one nose…
“But this chick here has none of them.
— É…
"Have you noticed that in everyone there is only one you?"
— But dad…
- Only one. You are a rarity. There may be others like it. But you, yourself, there is only one. If someday another you appears in front of you, you can say: it's false.
“So I'm the most valuable thing in the world.
— Look, you must be worth around three trillion...
That night Maria's mother passed by her room and heard Maria talking to Snoopy:
"Do you know a diamond?"
