Jane Austen is one of the most famous English writers after more than two centuries of her death. Author of novels like Pride and Prejudice
She was born on December 16, 1775, in Hampshire, England. Daughter of the Reverend George Austen and Cassandra Austen, she was the second woman among seven siblings. When she turned eight, she was sent to boarding school – along with her sister Cassandra, her lifelong best friend – to receive a formal education. Her contact with the books comes from access to the family library, which is allowed after returning from boarding school.
As a teenager, Austen wrote comedies, and her first well-finished book was Lady Susan, written in epistolary form, when the author was nineteen. In 1797, Austen had already written two novels, Reason and sensibility (first called Elinor and Marianne) and Pride and Prejudice (originally First Impressions). Offered by the Englishwoman's father to a publisher, the books were rejected. The publication of the titles took place only in 1811 and 1813, respectively, signed with the code name “a lady”.
Jane Austen is also the author of emma, Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey, novels in which she sought to portray the society of the time and the woman's search for the best marriage, as the only way to ascend socially. Appearances are presented by the characters' dialogues and contradictions, in a text full of irony.
The proximity of her texts to her life leads to an autobiographical reading of Austen's work, and even though she never married, it is believed that Jane had boyfriends. As a young woman, she even accepted a marriage proposal and then ran away.
He died on July 18, 1817, aged 42, a victim of Addison's disease. left the novel unfinished Sanditon.
