The centenary of the birth of Nelson Gonçalves, one of the greatest singers in the history of Brazilian music, is celebrated this Friday, June 21st. And, to mark the date, Correios launched a stamp that will be presented in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Santana do Livramento, in Rio Grande do Sul, where the artist was born.
Owner of a remarkable voice and considered the greatest interpreter in Brazil, Nelson Gonçalves sold more than 80 million records, thus conquering the title of King of Radio in the 40s.
Antônio Gonçalves Sobral was the registered name, later changed at the notary by the artist himself to Antônio Nelson Gonçalves. The singer moved to São Paulo as a child and at the end of the 1930s, he came to Rio de Janeiro to participate in tests on the main radio stations at the time.
But it was in the capital of São Paulo, and after a lot of insistence, that he received the first invitation to record the waltz “If I could one day”, by Orlando Monella and Oswaldo França. This was the beginning of the artist's career, with the recording of his first album, in 1941.
Before, however, when he was still young, he worked as a newsboy, mechanic, shoeshine boy and fighter, but his great passion was in music. He was a stutterer and that's why he earned the nickname of canister. He was a student of maestro Bellardi, who advised him to dedicate himself to the popular style. Nelson Gonçalves died in 1998.
For fans of the “Rei da Boemia”, the Correio's stamp will be available in the main agencies across the country and also in the virtual store. The issue has a print run of 20 thousand sheets, each with 20 stamps. The unit costs R$1.30.
The piece is printed with an image of the artist in black and white, and a gold application in the words “Nelson Gonçalves – Centenário”. Below, the phrase “The greatest voice of Brazil”.
