cats are family Felidae and emerged approximately 25 million years ago. They have short fur and legs adapted for running. Your senses – sight, smell, hearing – are very developed. They are skilled hunters, develop high speeds and possess exceptional strength and dexterity in their jumps. Therefore, they are generally predators of the environments in which they find themselves.
This characteristic of predation is extremely important – in this way, the big cats help to maintain the ecological balance of the areas in which they are found. Thus, animals such as peccaries, collared peccaries and deer have their populations controlled in certain environments.
Cats need large areas of continuous forest to survive and habitat loss is one of the biggest threats to their survival. The reduction in size and the decrease in the legal protection of protected areas directly threatens these animals, as well as agricultural expansion, illegal hunting, mining and the construction of hydroelectric power plants.
The running over of wild animals on roads is another serious problem. Studies by the Brazilian Center for Studies in Road Ecology, Federal University of Lavras (UFLA), and Minas Gerais, indicate that more than 15 animals die by being run over on Brazilian roads every second.
