Oops! Be careful when stepping on any seemingly lifeless puddle, it can be the home of some animated ones, like the catfish! To give you an idea, this fish is so rare that only one specimen of this species, collected in 1940, in the Ribeira do Iguape river basin, in São Paulo, was known by the researchers. In 2007, however, a new population was discovered in a small stream in the same region.
But what makes this species of catfish so hard to find, to the point of being considered endangered? First, he prefers small, shallow streams, small pools that can easily be polluted. Another problem is that these streams are usually found in lowland forests in the Mata region. Atlantic and most of what's left of the biome is in the mountains, where the species naturally doesn't occurs.
The bagrinhos need preserved streams to live and the vegetation around it too, because it prevents the water temperature from getting too high on hot days and prevents sand and mud from entering the Water.
O Field stripe it lives in a small stream of clear water about a meter wide and only four inches deep and many leaves that have fallen from the vegetation. The small fish uses these dead leaves to hide, and can even bury itself at the bottom of the stream when it feels threatened. There, it feeds on small invertebrates, like some insects that can fall into water.
The conservation of nature makes all the difference for any kind of living being, be it for a plant, a catfish or even for us humans. Think about it!
