Researchers announce the discovery of the largest Brazilian dinosaur, 25 meters long.
If you live in Rio de Janeiro, you've already seen those double and articulated buses of the BRT transport system. Think they are great? for the titanosaurus Austroposeidon magnificus, recently released by Brazilian paleontologists, was even bigger: it measured 25 meters in length. He was none other than the biggest dinosaur ever discovered in Brazil!
Its fossils were found in 1953 near the city of Presidente Prudente, in the state of São Paulo, by a local resident. At the time, the Gaucho paleontologist Llewellyn Ivor Price (1905-1980), one of the pioneers in this area of research in Brazil, was passing by. Warned of the find, he collected a large part of the material and took it to the Museum of Earth Sciences, in Rio de Janeiro. But the identification of the dinosaur only became public in 2016, when researchers said it was a species still unknown to science.
Titanosaurs dominated the entire supercontinent Godwana, which, millions of years ago, brought together the continental masses that today make up South America, Africa, India, Antarctica and Australia. THE. magnificus had relatives, for example, in neighboring Argentina, like the Futalognkosaurus it's the Mendozasaurus, who were also giants.
In Brazil, about a dozen species of titanosaurus have been described, but none of them was that large. As is common when talking about giant dinosaurs, the description of the Austroposeidon it was not based on a complete skeleton, but only on a few bones: vertebrae of the animal's neck and back, which, although somewhat damaged by time, revealed important details that allowed us to differentiate it from others titanosaurs.
