If you've heard about Monteiro Lobato, you've certainly heard about one of his greatest creations, the Sítio do Picapau Amarelo. When Lobato created the site and its characters, he didn't imagine that he would forever be marking the history of Brazilian children's literature, which would make this paulista from the city of Taubaté its greatest representative.
Lobato was one of the first writers to embark on the playful universe of children. When he started writing for the little ones, there was still no literature aimed at this audience, which had to be content with the difficult stories written for adults. The history of Sítio do Picapau Amarelo began in 1921, when Monteiro Lobato published the book Narizinho Arrebitado. After that came many others: O Saci (1921), Fábulas de Narizinho (1921), O Marquês de Rabicó (1922), O Engave de Narizinho (1927), Reinações de Narizinho (1931), The Hunts of Pedrinho (1933), Emilia in the Country of Grammar (1934), Geography by Dona Benta (1935) and Stories by Tia Anastácia (1937).
In 1939, Monteiro Lobato published The Yellow Woodpecker, a book that tells when and why the characters from the farm went to live there. The main characters of Sítio do Picapau Amarelo are Dona Benta, Pedrinho, Narizinho, Emília, Tia Anastasia, Viscount Sabugosa, Uncle Barnabé, Marquis de Rabicó, the donkey Conselheiro and the rhinoceros Quindim. All of them coexisted harmoniously with characters from the world of imagination, as well as characters that Lobato rescued from Greek mythology. In this way, the writer's main intention was to entertain and educate through reading, encouraging the little ones to want to know.
