World Cup Activities
  • Willie 1966 (England) – First mascot in the history of the Football World Cup and one of the first in major sporting tournaments. Lion is the traditional symbol of Great Britain, its national coat of arms and emblem of its football association. He is dressed in a shirt in the colors of the British flag with the inscription “WORLD CUP” (World Cup).
  • Juanito 1970 (Mexico) – The character wears a national hat and national team attire. His name is short for the name Juan, popular in Hispanic countries. During the World Cup, local children dressed up like that, that's why the streets were filled with live mascots.
  • Tip and Tap 1974 (Germany) – First double mascot in the history of the Football World Cup. In almost every language the names of these pets convey a message of optimism. They are dressed in the German national team attire with the inscription WM (Weltmeisterschaft – World Cup) and the number 74.
  • Gauchito 1978 (Argentina) – Argentina won this Cup. His hat, scarf and whip are the traditional attire of the Gauchos V (inhabitants of the pampas). In 1978 Argentina became the third country to use a boy image as a symbol of the Cup.
  • Naranjito 1982 (Spain) – The first mascot that is not a living being, but an object. The name derives from “orange” in Spanish. These fruits, grown in Murcia and Valencia, are some of the sweetest in the world and are considered the best for making juices. He is dressed in the national team's costume.
  • Pique 1986 (Mexico) – Mexico hosted the Cup again and presented an edible mascot – a chili pepper. Her name comes from the word “spicy”, related to this spice. Pique pepper continued the tradition of using fruits and vegetables as symbols of the World Cup.
  • Ciao 1990 (Italy) – The best known Italian word was chosen for name. Italy did not keep the tradition of choosing a “cute” mascot. Ciao represents a human figure in the colors of the Italian flag and a soccer ball as its head.
  • Striker 1994 (USA) – The mascot was created by the giant Disney. For the first time, the mascot is accompanied by a major advertising campaign, promotional videos and even cartoons are filmed. He is dressed in a costume in the colors of the US flag and the inscription “USA 94”.
  • Footix 1998 (France) – The Gallic rooster is the symbol of France. Footix, created by French designer Fabrice Pialot, has become the most successful mascot in the history of football. In the 1998 World Cup, the victory fell to the French national team. Its name derives from the word “football” with the ending -ix, inspired by the French Asterix – a very popular character in France and a hero of comics and movies.
  • Ato, Kaz and Nik 2002 (South Korea and Japan) – The first mascots of the new century and new technologies. These imaginary beings, colored yellow, purple and blue and created using 3D animation, should reflect the host countries' advances in new technologies and information technology. The three belong to a team of "Atmobol" (an imaginary sport similar to football), Ato is the coach, while Kaz and Nik are players.
  • Goleo VI and the Pille ball 2006 (Germany) – For the first time in the tournament's history, the final took place without the mascot, as the manufacturing company went bankrupt before the start of the Cup. The mascot's name contains the words “gol” and “leo” (lion), while Pille derives from the popular name for football in the German language. The lion wears the national team's costume number 06.
  • Zakumi 2010 (South Africa) – The name Zakumi derives from ZA (South Africa's international acronym) and “kumi”, which means “ten” in some African languages. Zakumi's hair was dyed green to camouflage on the field lawn. According to legend, Zakumi was born on June 16, 1994, the year in which South African democracy was established.
  • Fuleco 2014 (Brazil) – The name Fuleco is formed by the first two and the last letters of the word “football” (Fui) and “eco” from ecology. Fuleco likes to dance and uses local dance figures such as samba. Fuleco is an armadillo, when it rolls up it looks like a soccer ball.
  • Zabivaka 2018 (Russia) – The mascot was chosen by the inhabitants of Russia by Internet voting, instead of the traditional drawing. It was created by design student Ekaterina Bocharova. He wears a shirt with the inscription “RUSSIA 2018” and wears orange sports glasses on his head. The costume features the national white, blue and red colors of the Russian team.
