When the heart receives a visit

I live making up stories. I make up worlds. Invent friends. These things only exist in my imagination. They're just mine. I like to write, to put on paper everything that's in my head, but I've never done it. Until, last night, my father took the turtles to visit the jade elephant, with a broken trunk, and who lives across the table from the house. It's the first thing my dad does whenever he sits down to write. Because there is so much decoration on the table that he has to move things away and make room for his typewriter – Januária is her name. Once the clearing is open, Dad says to me softly when I'm around:

– It's time for the turtles to visit the elephant.
Okay, I know it's time for him to be alone, putting down the ideas that are in his head on paper. So I'll just look for something to do: I'll play ball with my friends, fly a kite, eat ice cream. Or I'm idly thinking about life.
Yesterday he finished another book. It spoke of a boy who had a very beautiful smile and one day he woke up without it. I liked it so much that I made my dad count a lot of times, until he got tired. I then asked:
– How do we make up stories?
He replied, scratching his head:
– First, son, we have to write and read a lot. That's how we prepare to receive a visit from inspiration, which is a crazy thing that pops into our heads, all of a sudden, without knocking on the door, and makes a mess. Turns everything into the air. Move and move things around. It looks like a gale. Sometimes he goes there on his heartstring, plays with her and invents a new rhythm: stronger, weaker, different from everyone else. When I'm sleeping, every now and then she comes and wakes me up; get me out of bed, make me get up. And inspiration only rests when we put it on paper. And give it life and let it be born. There it is forever and happy, because it will only bring joy to those who read it.
