Researchers at the Universidade Estadual Paulista, in Rio Claro, reached the conclusion that the joint extinction of two of the largest South American herbivores – tapir and peccary – can reduce forest biodiversity in the continent.
The study lasted 10 years and also indicated that plant communities are more diverse in areas where these two species are present. In forests where only one of the animals is found, the diversity is lower.
According to the Professor at the Department of Bioscience at Unesp, Mauro Galetti, herbivores used to inhabit most of the forests from South America, but its survival is threatened in many places as a result of illegal hunting and deforestation for agricultural exploitation.
