What do students think about “black” society on Black Awareness Day? What does this day symbolize for society and for themselves?
Encourage students' reflection on one of the most commented and analyzed days by society and, especially, by the student class, which is the Black Awareness Day. From there, make them evaluate what has changed and what remains the same for the black “race”.
This activity aims to address the Black Awareness Day, making students reflect on society as a whole, especially black society. The date of November 20th was established as Black Consciousness Day since it was on that day that in 1695, Zumbi, leader of the quilombo dos palmares, was killed, the leader most famous for resisting the slavery. This day aims to make the population rethink discrimination, rethink their attitudes, rethink their history itself, the mistakes you made, the mistakes you keep making and, above all, the mistakes you shouldn't make more. The day is to remind everyone that thousands of people were killed while crossing from one continent to another and that thousands more people were and continue to be killed on the continent – America. Death is not only the physical, visualized by everyone, but also the one that no one sees, the death of the soul, this is the most silent and painful death, as it is the death that no one seeks to help.
Students will speak something related to “Day of Black Consciousness”. What they think is right and what they think is wrong in contemporary society. They will quote poems, excerpts from songs, authors famous for writing about “Negritude”.
