What is man's best friend? Although the popular saying has consecrated the dog as the owner of this title, this is the type of question that depends on the preference of each one. But when we talk about our oldest friend, there is no point in discussion: the first animal to be domesticated was really the dog. Or, to be more precise, a common ancestor of today's wolves and dogs. The relationship began in prehistory, about 30,000 years ago, in different parts of the world – such as China, Europe and North America. It was an exchange: dogs got food, and humans got protection. Over time, the bond deepened and extended to many other species of pets.
Today, in Brazil, it is more common to have animals than children. Of every 100 families, 62 harbor some pet, while only 36 have children, according to the latest data from IBGE, from 2013. And this relationship brings a series of benefits for the body and mind: "The interaction with animals produces an effect anti-stress, strengthens the immune system and increases the chances of survival for those who have problems cardiac. In addition, it increases the possibilities of social interaction”, explains the researcher from the University of São Paulo (USP), Carine Redígolo, who studies animal behavior.
The link between humans and animals is so powerful that it interferes with our hormones. Researchers at the University of Azabu, Japan, found that a simple exchange of looks between the dog and owner to raise the level of oxytocin - the substance that helps form bonds between mothers and sons.
If you like animals, you are familiar with these discoveries of science. Interacting with these loving creatures fills our routine with joy in many ways.
