Antônio Francisco Lisboa was born in 1730 in Vila Rica (now Ouro Preto), Minas Gerais and lived 84 years. Son of Manoel Francisco Lisboa, Portuguese and an African slave named Izabel, he became the greatest sculptor in Brazil, having worked until the eve of his death. He left behind a vast work of great artistic value.

His education took place in his own family environment, learning from his father, who was, along with his brother, a master in the art of stonework and carving in the Baroque style.

His life changes completely from the moment that a serious deforming disease strikes him. The disease worsens over time, to the point that the fingers of your hands fall off. Hence the nickname Aleijadinho.
