On March 5th, the National Day of Classical Music is celebrated. The date was chosen to honor one of the greatest musicians born in Brazil: conductor Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959).
At just six years of age, Heitor Villa-Lobos began to play musical instruments. First clarinet and cello (actually a viola adapted by his father for him), then guitar and piano. Always surrounded by music – and with a unique curiosity for different sounds – the carioca became one of the greatest composers in our history.
His father, Raul Villa-Lobos, played a key role in his career. In addition to teaching him the first chords on the cello, he was demanding in his musical perception exercises. They say that when a glass broke, or a bird sang, Raul would immediately ask his son what the musical note had been.
