This small fish lives in only one place in the world: the Olhos d’Água cave, located in the north of the state of Minas Gerais. It is considered different from other cave fish because the individuals that live at the bottom of the cave are completely white (albino) and eyeless. Those at the entrance to the cave, on the other hand, have little spots on their bodies and tiny eyes.
Measuring, at most, eight centimeters in length, the cave catfish has, near its mouth, “whiskers” or barbels, which are very sensitive and used to find food. Among the favorite foods of this species are aquatic insects and earthworms captured at the bottom of the river.
As the cave is a closed place with few entrances, during the dry season, the available food decreases a lot. This makes the catfish have great difficulties to get food. During the rainy season, however, the water is full of food. At that time, he took the opportunity to recover his energy for reproduction.
The chicks of the cave catfish are usually born at the end of the rainy season, which is good, as this reduces the risk of the force of the current taking them out of their natural environment.
Any environmental change in the Olhos d’Água cave, or in its surroundings, puts the life of this fish, which is already threatened with extinction, at risk. For this reason, and also to conserve other local species, the Cavernas do Peruaçu National Park, where Olhos d'Água is located, was transformed into a conservation unit. This means that we can know the place, but when we leave, we have to leave it exactly as we found it.
