This curious crustacean was discovered by scientists in 1987, in the Lago Azul cave, in Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul. O FOR. brasiliensis it measures three to four millimeters – it's practically the size of a grain of rice! – lives in stagnant or slow-flowing groundwater. Without eyes or pigment, it can be seen swimming in water or groping through submerged rocks and decaying organic matter for food – probably microbes.
Not much is known about these animals. We know, for now, that they are often found from a depth of five meters - although some have already been recorded below 100 meters -, that females carry their offspring in a type of bag - the baby carrier, which is in the belly - and that males are very rare.
