It runs to and fro among the branches of the trees in the forest and it doesn't “call it”, no! He lives playing and, despite being curious and being aware when someone appears, it is difficult to be observed even by researchers. But a high-pitched sound can give away your presence. This is the dark-saw marmoset, a small, sapeca monkey that seems to whistle.
The dark-saw marmoset's body is covered with black hair and red spots. Its face is whitish and its tail is black, with thin white rings. Something quite striking in marmosets are the tufts of hair in the ear region. In the case of the dark-saw marmoset, guess what color these mounds of fur are? That's right! They are black!
He lives in groups of two to seven individuals. Generally, each group is formed by a dominant female – this means that she is the head of the pack –, in addition to having among them also a male and some youngsters.
The dark-saw marmoset feeds on insects, small fruits and especially exudates, a type of viscous liquid that comes out of the trunk of some trees.
Females of this species always have twins! Newborn puppies are carried on their mother's back, but when they grow up they help to take care of the younger siblings.
Today, the dark marmoset is only found in refuges, in the remaining fragments of Atlantic Forest located in southeastern Brazil. In addition, different species of marmosets, originating from other regions, but which were brought by humans to the habitat of the dark-saw marmoset, are occupying what is left of their homes. They are left with the conservation units that keep the species safe, such as the Itatiaia National Park and the Serra da Bocaina National Park, in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
