Newton's apple story first appeared in Elements of Newton's Philosophy, written by Voltaire and published in 1738. In this book Voltaire – who greatly admired Sir Isaac and his theories – presented a clear and admirable interpretation of Newtonian ideas.
The apple legend was spread by the English scientist's niece, Catherine Barton Conduitt, and her husband, who lived with him in the last years of the scientist's life. Furthermore, Newton himself told scholar William Stukeley that he was inspired by an apple falling in his backyard – and not his head – to investigate the theory of gravitation. Stukeley recounts the conversation he had with Newton in the book Sir Isaac Newton's Memory, published in 1752. This everyday incident served to inspire a theory capable of changing the world forever.
