Polychaetes are relatives of earthworms, leeches and other animals of the annelids group. The name itself, which comes from the Greek, indicates an important characteristic of these animals: poly means "many" and boring it means "bristles". Polychaete, then, is an animal with many bristles (similar to thick fur) all over its body – which in fact happens in most species.
Attached to parapodia (structures that look like legs present on the sides of the body), the bristles help these animals move through the water or the seabed. The number of parapods varies from one species to another, and some do not even have them. In these cases, the animal spends most of its life buried in the layer that covers the bottom of rivers and lakes, called sediment.
