The first botanical gardens emerged from the work of ancient botanists: people who were dedicated to the study of plants. They collected both native species – typical of their country – and exotic – originating from another nation – and cultivated them. They sought to catalog them, acclimatize them when necessary – that is, adapt them to a climate different from the one present in their place of origin – and disseminate them. With this, they contributed to the emergence of some of the most important collections of plants in the world.
In Brazil, the first botanical garden was built in Recife during the period of Dutch domination, which lasted from 1630 to 1654. In it, it was possible to find specimens of fauna and flora from different parts of the world. After him, Brazil would only gain another botanical garden in 1798, this time in Belém do Pará, called São José. The most important botanical garden in our country, however, is the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden, founded in 1808 by Prince Regent D. João VI, with about 13 thousand specimens of exotic and native plants.
