No one knows for sure when or where card games first appeared. Probably, letters appeared in China, derived from paper money, in the 10th century. In the beginning, they were simple strips of paper, marked with shells, stones, arrows and bones, used in divination rituals. Around 1300, the letters arrived in Europe, taken by the Arabs. They were known as
tarots, in decks of 22 cards, which were combined, at the end of the 14th century, with the oriental deck, of 56 cards. It was the French, in the 16th century, who introduced the modern 52-card deck, leaving the tarot only for predictions. The most common suits were cups, coins, swords and clubs. From France, the deck won the world, and the suits evolved to the current hearts, diamonds, spades and clubs. Nowadays, more than a hundred card games are known, involving reasoning and, mainly, luck.Available in: .
