Cartilaginous fish, in general, have few offspring and go up to two years without reproducing. Thus, unlike the situation of other fish that lay thousands of eggs at once, fishing ends up having much more serious consequences on the populations of sharks and rays.
Sawfish, having an extension full of thorns on their heads, are often accidentally caught in fishermen's nets. Other times, however, fishing is intentional: as they usually live in shallow areas of the ocean, they frequent areas of mouths of rivers, estuaries and mangroves, become easy targets for fishing for purposes commercials.
Other serious problems for the species' survival are the pollution and degradation of the coastal zone.
