Gadot, who was in final negotiations for the role, will join the previously announced Rachel Zegler in the Marc Webb-directed film, which is slated to begin production in 2022.
"Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" is important to the studio, considering it's based on Disney's first animated feature film, which has become a hallmark of its many global theme parks and is seen not only as a great technological achievement, but also as a narrative. The film, which opened in 1937, was an unstoppable sensation and earned Walt Disney a special Academy Award.
This new live-action adaptation, first announced in 2017, will feature new songs by songwriting duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (“Dear Evan Hansen,” “The Greatest Showman”). Pasek and Paul are no strangers to the world of Disney's live-action remakes, having worked with Alan Menken on two new songs for "Aladdin." Marc Platt is producing this new film.
The Evil Queen is one of Disney's most iconic villains and it will be interesting to see what Gadot does with her, following in the footsteps of the other actresses Angelina Jolie, Emma Stone and Cate Blanchett, who similarly turned animated malefactors into flesh and bone.
“Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” joins a growing list of Disney live-action remakes, including a sequel to “Cruella,” a prequel to “The Lion King” (directed by Barry Jenkins), “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” “Hercules” (produced by the Russo Brothers), and “Lilo & Stitch”.
David Lowery's "Peter Pan and Wendy" is the next live-action adaptation slated for release and will likely hit Disney+ next year. (Pinocchio, directed by Tom Hanks and directed by Robert Zemeckis, is also being prepped for Disney+, but a release date has not been confirmed.)
