Brazilian Mergansers have discreet plumage. The head and neck are very dark, with a greenish reflection and a beautiful plume, which is larger in males. The body is gray, with brown details. Chest, abdomen and wings have some white feathers, while the feet are red. They swim in the water, which is a beauty, thanks to the membranes they have between their fingers, making it easy to move around.
The male and female are very close and choose a part of the river to live. But it's not easy to observe them because they camouflage very well in the environment. At the slightest sign of danger, they fly or swim quickly. In extreme situations, they dive and reappear quite far away, except when the couple has small puppies. There, they don't abandon the family, they swim and call the offspring, avoiding leaving them alone.
A united family seems to be the motto of the Brazilian Merganser, who takes really good care of her. To have their young, the couple makes a nest in hollow trees, rocks or riverbanks. The chosen location is usually the family home for several years. There are placed up to eight eggs, with intervals of one to two days. […]
When they are born, the chicks stay only one day in the nest. The next morning, they jump to swim in the river. This way, the whole family is together and the parents can protect them from their main predators, otters and birds of prey.
As it spends much of its life in rivers, the Brazilian Merganser needs clean water. It is from the water that the species takes its food: fish, such as the lambari, which they capture with their strong beak, in long dives.
Water pollution and the removal of vegetation near rivers are the main environmental problems that threaten the survival of the Brazilian Merganser. When a certain area where he lives is deforested, the surrounding land flows into the river, this is called silting. The water – which is often already polluted – mixed with soil becomes cloudy and dark, which makes it difficult for the bird to catch fish. Without clean water and without food, this animal could disappear from the planet.
