There is a hidden treasure in the state of Rio de Janeiro that almost no one knows about. No, it's not a golden chest, but a kind of bird from the anteater family (or tamnophilids, as ornithologists prefer), which only exists in some Brazilian restingas, the anthill-of-the-coast.
This relic of the animal world was introduced to the public in 1990, when two ornithologists from Rio de Janeiro described the species, making it famous among bird specialists. The coastal anthill tends to take shelter amidst vegetation and, therefore, it goes easily unnoticed in the eyes of people. This bird is usually seen in pairs, moving through the restinga bushes in search of food or patrolling its territory.
Males are black with white spots on the wings, while females are lighter, with a back. greyish-brown, whitish underparts, white eyebrow, a black band covering the eyes and white spots on the wings.
Unlike other "true" anteaters, who took this name for chasing army ants - nomadic insects that march on the forest floor in search of food - the coastal anthill is so called only because it is part of the forest. family. This bird's diet includes other insects, such as caterpillars, crickets and moths, which they capture on the ground, in the foliage or even in flight.
The nest of the littoral anthill is usually built on forks – small Y-shaped bush branches – a few meters above the ground. The nest looks like an open basket, made by the parents with small roots, vegetable fibers, fine tree bark and insect cocoons. There are usually laid two eggs. As soon as the chicks are born, they are fed on adult larvae and insects. Parents are very careful with the nest to prevent predators from discovering it.
The coastal anthill is threatened with extinction because, in addition to living in a very small area of the state of Rio de Janeiro, many beach houses and condominiums are built in these places. Little by little, the buildings are replacing the restingas where the bird lives, making its future uncertain.
