Activity of text interpretation, aimed at students in the sixth year of elementary school, about the icy giants. Icebergs are blocks of ice that break off from glaciers in polar areas of the planet. Therefore, they are common in the so-called glacial oceans: in the Arctic, to the north, and in the Antarctic, to the south of the planet.. And do you know why they float in the ocean? Let's find out? To do this, carefully read the text “Frozen Giants”! Then answer the various interpretative questions proposed!

On the night of April 14, 1912, a ship sank in the North Atlantic Ocean. The name of this vessel was Titanic. You may have heard the story of this accident. Remember why the big ship sank? Let's remember: he hit another giant, an icy giant, an iceberg.
Icebergs are blocks of ice that break off from glaciers in polar areas of the planet. Therefore, they are common in the so-called glacial oceans: in the Arctic, in the north, and in the Antarctic, in the south of the planet.
These large masses of ice are made of fresh water, vary in size and shape, and can be flat or sharp. You know that expression that says “This is just the tip of the iceberg”? It refers to the fact that the piece that appears from an iceberg, the tip that sticks out of the water, is only a tenth of its size.
The formation of an iceberg happens like this: the movement of the waves and the heat cause ruptures in the glaciers. The fragments that result from these breaks, as we have already seen, are the icebergs themselves, which begin to float in the ocean. That's right, float. Now you might be wondering: a giant, heavy block of ice floating in the ocean? This is good! This is kind of weird…
Well then, this is because the density of the water that forms an iceberg is less than the density of salt water in the surrounding sea. In fact, this is a characteristic of ice: its density (that is, its mass divided by the volume it occupies) is less than that of water. The iceberg's fluctuation can also be explained by Archimedes' Principle: “a body immersed in a liquid will float, sink or become neutral according to the weight of the liquid displaced by it. body". In other words, the weight of all the liquid that an iceberg displaces is greater than its weight, which causes it to float.
Icy and heavy, these giants make their way floating across the seas. Little by little, they melt… Little by little? No longer. Due to what we now call global warming, that is, the sudden increase in temperature on the Earth's surface, this melting process is happening faster and faster. Imagine if all this ice turned to water in a short time...
