Did you know there are small builders living on water?

The builders in question are tricopters, aquatic insects that in the larval stage build shelters at the bottom of lakes, rivers and streams.

The houses made by tricopter larvae have different shapes and are based on pieces of wood, leaves or grains of sand. Cement, so to speak, is the silk thread that these animals produce. By the way, some of these houses are entirely made of silk – chic, isn't it?!

The name tricopter comes from the Greek and means fur and wing. That's because, when these animals reach adulthood, they look like a moth, only with slightly less hairy wings. But it is in the larval stage – very early in their life – that the nickname “architect of the waters” makes sense to these insects: their buildings are, in fact, armor to protect them from predators.

Tricopters can live up to a year in the form of larvae and can measure up to four centimeters in length. In this phase, they breathe like fish, through gills. The food, in turn, is quite varied - we can find larvae feeding on pieces of plants, on material in decomposition, some building webs to filter particles and it is still possible to find others in the position of predators.

The importance of tricopteran larvae is great in aquatic environments, because they participate in the food chain, serving as food for insectivorous fish. In addition, they play another important role in nature: as they are sensitive to pollution, they indicate the quality of the water where they live.

Curious little animal, huh?!
