O Festival of the Stars – Tanabata Matsuri is considered the biggest traditional Japanese festival in Brazil. In São Paulo, the streets of the eastern district of Liberdade receive hanging decorations made with colored paper.
The main attraction of the party are the tanzakus, colored strips of paper on which people write their orders. These papers are hung in sassadakes (bamboos) scattered through the streets. Each color has a meaning […]
The tradition is based on the legend of the Tanabata, which emerged 4,000 years ago in China. The story goes that Princess Orihime, who was a weaver, and Pastor Kengyu fell in love. The two forgot their obligations, dedicating all their time to love. As punishment, they were turned into stars and separated in the Milky Way. But the sadness of the couple in love moved the Celestial Lord, who began to allow a single annual meeting between the two, always on the seventh night of the seventh month of the ancient lunar calendar. To thank you for the date of the meeting, Orihime (Vega star of the Lira constellation) and Kengyu (Altair star of the Eagle constellation) carry out the orders that are hanging on the bamboos.
The bamboos with the colored strips are burned at the end of the party, so that the smoke takes the orders to the skies.
The popularization of the party in Japan took place in 1946, as a way to encourage the country to recover from the ravages of World War II. But, in São Paulo, the first edition took place on July 2nd and 3rd, 1979. Who started the research to bring the party to the city was Tetsuo Oohashi, then president of the Miyagui Kenjin-kai Association of Brazil. For the first Tanabata in São Paulo, 100 bamboos were decorated.
