The monk's heads are very small cacti that go unnoticed if we don't look closely. About four inches in diameter, its body resembles an ice cream cone that is buried in the ground. The only part we can see above the ground looks like a green thorny disk when viewed from above.
These cacti live in a region of the sertão that is very hot and where it hardly rains. Like all cacti, they are able to store rainwater inside their bodies and can use it during the several months of the dry season. During these months of drought, the monks' heads use the stored water and the top of the cone ends up withering and decreasing in size. Thus, they hide below ground and protect themselves from drought.
