Forest animal population has halved since 1970
This is what the NGO WWF report reveals
Deforestation, poaching, disease, climate change. For the wild animals that live in the world's forests, the last few decades have represented a catastrophe. According to a report released by the environmental Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the population of these animals has halved since 1970.
The study analyzed 455 populations of 268 species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds that live in forests and concluded that there was a 53% decline in the number of vertebrate animals between 1970 and 2014. WWF points out that the situation is particularly critical in the Amazon and other tropical forests. The study also analyzed populations from temperate, boreal and Mediterranean forests.
According to the NGO, 60% of these losses are related to deforestation and the drastic degradation of the habitat of animal populations. The text also points out that hunting, the introduction of invasive species, the spread of diseases and climate change also contributed to the picture.
In the case of Brazil, WWF mentions the felling of trees by loggers as the main cause of declining animal population, but fires also had long-lasting effects on several species.
