The banana tree belongs to the Musaceae family, whose members have an underground stem full of scales, called rhizome, which is the true and only stem of the banana tree. That green part that we see and what appears to be the stem is actually a set of layers of leaves, one inside the other, that sprout from the rhizome. Well then, it is from this underground stem that a new plant is born!
In other words, every cultivated banana tree is obtained exclusively from seedlings of the rhizome of another plant – in some places, the seedling is known as “banana tree's eye”.
