How does the subway work?

Say: have you ever taken the subway? He likes? Feel like walking? The word “metro” comes from “metropolitan”, it is a reduction. It is a type of train designed to transport a lot of people in big cities and at high speed.

The subway runs on its own tracks, either underground (in tunnels dug underground), on the ground surface or even in suspended structures, which allow passengers to see the city landscape from above. quickly!

Every subway is controlled by an Operational Control Center – an office where professionals responsible for the safety, agility and regularity of this type of transport stay. There are computers and several panels on which you can monitor the traffic, determine the train speed, the interval between them, control signaling and take decisions in case of emergency.

The vast majority of subway trains move by means of electric motors. Usually, there are two rails that support the wheels; but there is a third rail – energized! – responsible for the electrical supply of each train.

Speaking of trains, each subway train has two cockpits: one at each end, where the conductors are. Today, however, there are already fully computer-controlled subway systems, that is, without conductors!

And how does a huge machine like that manage to brake? Well then, there are two of the most used braking systems. One of them has a little help from the electric motor, which makes the machine stop. The other system is activated through shoes or pads, which are placed on the wheels or brake discs of the subway, something similar to the traditional brakes used in automobiles.

The subway is a very interesting transport alternative for big cities, because it is fast, safe and – best of all! – much less polluting than cars and buses! If you can choose your means of transport, think about it!
