Gueroba (scientific name syagrus oleracea) is a palm tree from the Cerrado biome, but it can be found in other regions of the country. […] The origin of the name comes from the word gwarai-rob, from the Tupi language, and means the bitter individual. The palm tree can be found in the states of Ceará, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Bahia, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Tocantins, São Paulo, Paraná, Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro and in the District Federal.
With a thin and straight stem, the plant, adapted to hot climate regions, can reach up to twenty meters in height. It has leaves and flowers that appear in bunches. It bears fruit between June and January. Each palm tree produces between four and eight bunches, and each bunch has an average of 217 coconuts. Each coconut weighs on average 35 grams.
The almonds are extracted from coconuts, used to make sweets, known as taia sweets, among other recipes. In the past it was used to make cooking oil and ash soap. The pulp oil is edible. Almond oil has medicinal properties and is mainly used in the production of cosmetics.
Gueroba hearts of palm have a bitter taste and are widely used in cooking, especially in the states of Goiás and Minas Gerais. Coconut leaves and pulp are widely used to complement livestock feed.
In addition to these functions, the gueroba is used to decorate gardens, parks and squares. Its predatory extractivism for the extraction of heart of palm has already drastically reduced the native guerobals.
