According to the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), in 2015 the Brazilian population was approximately 205 million inhabitants.
Brazil is the fifth most populous country in the world. However, it is considered a sparsely populated country, due to its low demographic density, 24 inhabitants per square kilometer (inhabitant/Km2)
The population distribution does not occur in a regular way, as we can see in the graph below:
In 1900 the Brazilian population was around 17 million inhabitants. In 2015 it already had approximately 205 million inhabitants.
Some of the facts that influence population growth are vegetative growth and the balance of migrations.
The growth of the Brazilian population started to decrease in the 1960s, one of the reasons being the sharp drop in the birth rate.
The reduction in the fertility rate, which is the number of children per woman, is related to factors such as the increase in education, greater participation of women in the labor market and the use of planning familiar.
In 2015, according to IBGE, about 52% of the population was made up of women. Currently, almost half of Brazilian households have women as the main provider of resources.
Making a comparison between 1991 and 2015, we can see that the number of young people has decreased and that of adults and the elderly has increased, indicating that the population is aging.
1991 | 2015 | |
Young | 45% | 30% |
Adults | 48% | 56% |
Seniors | 7% | 14% |
