Eleanor Hodgman Porter (1868-1920) was born in the small American town of Littleton, New Hampshire, into a traditional family in the region. She had a great singing voice and studied for several years at the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music, eventually building a local reputation as a singer. In 1892, she married businessman John Lyman Porter, and with him she moved to Massachusetts.
She ended up abandoning singing for literature and, in 1901, began to publish short stories in various magazines and newspapers. In 1907 she published her first book, Cross Currents. Then followed: The Turn of the Tide (1908), The Story of Marco (1911), Miss Billy (1911) – his first success – and Miss Billy's Decision (1912). He mainly wrote children's, adventure and women's novels.
In 1913 she published Pollyanna, a novel starring the orphan Pollyanna Whittier and inspired by the everyday life of her hometown. The book was an instant hit and ranked among the best-selling titles in the United States for several years. The petite, inveterate optimist won over the American public by reaffirming the strength of the peasant virtues of joy in life.
Two years later, the author released the equally successful Pollyanna Grows Up (Pollyanna girl). The books have been translated all over the world, as well as being adapted numerous times for theatre, television and film. Eleanor H. Porter is the author of more than thirty titles, among which stand out just david (David the orphan), The Road to Understanding (1917) and Oh Money! Money! (1918). He died at home in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
