Arraial de Canudos was a village set up by the sertanejos and by Blessed Antônio Conselheiro, in the backlands of Bahia, between 1893 and 1897. This agglomeration of thousands of people caused fear to the politicians of the newly created republic: they thought that Conselheiro and the sertanejos wanted the emperor's return. A great war ended up destroying the village in 1897. After that, other people came and occupied the same place, building houses on top of the destroyed ones. In the 1960s, a weir was built in the region, which ended up flooding the then city of Canudos. We can consider this one of the most important submerged archaeological sites in the country. And he's not at sea!
