NAME:

Read:

a giant of breath

It can be the size of a popular car. It weighs from 440 kilos to 750 kilos. But when you dive, nothing like the lightest of sea creatures. Its carapace, or shell, is formed by many bony plates interconnected by cartilaginous tissue, which makes it flexible. To top it off, all of this is covered with a skin that looks more like leather. Hence the name… Leatherback Turtle!

Observing this giant of the seas, we notice that its color is bluish-black with white spots (or spots). On its carapace, there are seven longitudinal fins. You know those shark fins? The keels of leatherback turtles look like them, but are much shorter. They facilitate the flow of water and the speed of swimming.

Among all species of sea turtles, the leatherback is the species capable of making the deepest and longest dives. The deepest known dive for this species was 1,280 meters, recorded in a study in 2008. Most beings capable of swimming could explode if they dive to this depth because of the high pressure at the bottom of the sea.

But the leatherback's flexible shell makes it possible for it to dive like this without putting its life at risk. Another skill of this animal is the breath! In 1999, a scientific study recorded 67-minute dives for this reptile. In 2008, another study recorded about 84 minutes. A year later, in 2009, a new record: a female was submerged for one hour and 26 minutes, that is, 86 minutes, at a depth of 1,186 meters!

The fact is that this excellent swimmer, with a great breath, does not lead a life as calm as it seems. In addition to dodging its predators, like all wild species, it needs luck to survive in oceans that are increasingly polluted. Chemical wastes threaten the health of these animals. In addition, the plastic bags thrown into the sea are often mistaken by them for jellyfish, their favorite dish, leading to their death by suffocation. But death from drowning is perhaps the biggest threat: they get tangled up in fishing nets and cannot rise to the surface for breath. Adding all this up, the leatherback turtles, unfortunately, find themselves threatened with extinction.
