How do geckos manage to walk on walls?

In the past, many researchers thought that geckos could walk on walls, on trees, and on any surface because of microsuckers on their feet. In the late 1990s, however, this theory fell apart. It turned out that they weren't suckers, no. The secret is that, behind each toe, the geckos have patches of skin, forming small sticky pads.

Each of these boards is covered with about 1 million bristles (hard and coarse hair). Each bristle is subdivided into 1,000 very fine parts. They achieve this “superpower” by the force of attraction between surfaces – even the smoothest ones, such as glass, for example – and the bristles.
