Coral reefs, as the name implies, are large colonies formed by marine animals known as corals. Not all corals, however, are capable of forming reefs: only those with microscopic algae called zooxanthellae that play a fundamental role in their survival. When a coral reef is formed, however, algae and marine animals have nothing but to celebrate. After all, they find housing and shelter there.
