Yeda Maria Correia de Oliveira, better known as YêdaMaria, was an important artist from Bahia. She was well known in Brazil and in the world for the expressiveness of her drawings, paintings, prints and collages, populated by small boats at sea, neatly arranged tables, mermaids and iemanjás. And, of course, the color and brightness of your beloved Bahia.
She was born in Salvador/BA in 1932. Daughter and granddaughter of teachers, she soon revealed an artistic bent. As soon as she finished high school, she went to study Visual Arts at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA). It was during the course, in 1956, that her talent first caught attention: her painting “Boys' Water Boats” received an honorable mention at the Salão Baiano de Artes Plásticas.
In 1962, already graduated, YêdaMaria went to Rio de Janeiro to study printmaking at the Escolinha de Arte do Brasil. Back in Bahia, she continued her studies with the engraver Henrique Oswald. The teacher was so excited with the student's performance that he sent one of her works to the Ouro Preto / MG Arts Festival. There was no other way – YêdaMaria was awarded in the Graphic Arts segment.
As she matured as an artist, YêdaMaria became more and more recognized. In 1964, she exhibited at the Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia at the invitation of her director, the prestigious modernist architect Lina Bo Bardi. In 1972, she began teaching drawing and engraving at the Federal University of Bahia. And in 1979, she became the first black student to receive an exchange scholarship from the Escola de Belas Artes from UFBA to carry out his master's degree at the Art Studio of the State University of Illinois, in the States United.
YêdaMaria returned to Brazil in 1982 and continued to produce vigorously. Several of her works became part of the collection of museums and galleries throughout Brazil, the United States and Europe.
She died in 2016, aged 84, leaving her art and the lesson learned from her mother as a legacy: never if let intimidate with the discriminatory pressure of prejudiced people who try to reduce or dehumanize the person black.
