The furry ones may look happy with their tongue out, but they're actually dying from the heat. It's just that, unlike us, dogs don't sweat through their skin, but try to lower their body temperature through breathing. “When the animal has its mouth open, there is a heat exchange. The hot air is dispersed and replaced by cooler air, which helps to cool it down”, explains veterinarian Sandro Corumba, from Santo André (SP). Dogs have sweat glands only on their paws, between the "pads" that cover their toes. On hot days, they get wetter because of sweating.
