prolonged effect

The effect of adrenaline on the organs is often slow to wear off. If the fright was severe, you may still feel your heart racing several minutes later, or even feel your hands shaking even though you are in a completely safe place. This is because, when adrenaline kicks in, our bodies still don't know how long the dangerous situation will last or how much energy it will take to escape it.

The greater the fright, the stronger the warning signal the brain will send to the adrenal gland and the greater the amount of adrenaline that __________________ to the organs. And also the longer it will take us to recover.
