The phenakistoscope was the first toy that really created the illusion of movement. Invented between 1828 and 1832 by the Belgian scientist Joseph Plateau, it is formed by two paper discs connected to each other by means of a rod fixed in a hole in the center of each disc. One of the disks has a sequence of images painted around the axis and the other has cracks in the same arrangement. When the discs are rotated, the viewer sees the images of the first disc moving through the cracks of the second.
